January Studio

Greetings in the new year! 2008 is rolling forward and we’re settling into step again after the holidays. I flew home to WV to be in cold winter weather for the first time in 2 years…yipes. Luckily the north east is having a mild winter so far so it wasn’t bad! Amazing how quickly one loses tolerance for cold. St. John is spectacular this time of year: breezy, clear and sunny. And more populated. Taxis, concierges, villas, restaurants and shops couldn’t be happier this time of year. It’s been wonderful catching up with friends and family over the holidays, reconnecting after dwindling out of touch over the year. As we’re filling our calendars and flying into 2008, already inundated with politics, crazy market news and uncomfortable international relations, I’d like to send you a blessing for gratifying experiences, personal achievement and strong relationships in your new year.

Lessons to Learn

With the transition into a new year comes the extra enthusiasm for trying new things and making new goals. No matter where you are in life, how old or educated or fit or connected, there’s room to grow. Do we ever reach the point where we would stop learning and growing? Why would you want to?

Successful men, in all callings, never stop acquiring specialized knowledge related to their major purpose, business, or profession. Those who are not successful usually make the mistake of believing that the knowledge-acquiring period ends when one finishes school. Traditional schooling really does little more than help one learn how to acquire more specific knowledge and skills. You learn what questions to ask and who and where to seek for answers.

Knowledge is only potential power. It becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action, and directed to a definite end. Any man is educated who knows where to get knowledge when he needs it, and how to organize that knowledge into definite plans of action. An educated man is not, necessarily, one who has an abundance of general or specialized knowledge. An educated man is one who has so developed the faculties of his mind that he may acquire anything he wants, or its equivalent, without violating the rights of others. And an educated man has the wisdom to know anyone and anything can offer a lesson.
